Alyssa Night

This ship would fail. It was only a matter of time.

Fortunately, the empress was no longer using light paths to transport high yield energy beams as weapons. Perhaps she had learned from last time that Alyssa would be able to disrupt them. It didn’t really matter. The imperial fleet still possessed enough firepower to destroy the city ship. By Alyssa’s reckoning, they only had half an hour left.

The Coalition fleet would get here. Eventually, once they shrugged off their poisonous Ares devices. But they wouldn’t come within half an hour.

There would be no cavalry. Everything was up to her. She was already giving everything she could.

It had distracted her when she’d had to come to Max’s aid. She now had more light. It didn’t matter. It wasn’t enough to protect everybody.

Structural alarms shrieked through the command room she knelt in.

She just had to close her eyes.

Another section of the ship was starting to rip apart. Talon was responsible for keeping everybody safe. He’d moved most people to the middle of the ship where structural supports would keep them safest for the longest.

Alyssa still couldn’t allow too much of the ship to fall. Those light bridges that connected the various bubbles of the ship were central to the ship’s overall integrity. If they cracked and fell, the whole ship would tear itself apart. Everybody within would soon succumb to the cold depths of space beyond.

There was… nothing Alyssa could damn well do.

Even Max was struggling, and he had a crystal.

What hope did Earth possibly have?

There was another alarm. Alyssa pulled herself up. She concentrated on her light again. She desperately sent it to every new crack in the ship as she attempted to hold it together. It was somewhat like… what was it again? She’d heard a Coalition officer mention something called Humpty Dumpty before. Some egg that had fallen off a wall apparently. People had glued it back together. The thing about gluing something back together, however, is it’s never as strong as it once was.

Alyssa screamed as 10 imperial cruisers concentrated their fire on a particularly weak section of the ship. She’d only just sent the Light of the Gods there to increase structural shields. But it couldn’t survive the barrage. That deck was destroyed, and so were several motes of her Light.

Once upon a time, Alyssa would’ve done anything to destroy the Light. Now as it was wrenched out from underneath her, she shrieked as if she’d just lost a limb.

She rocked back and forth, clutching the side of the console and trying to drag herself to her feet. It was too hard.

There was a beep. “Another insurrection has arisen,” Talon said. His voice was nothing but quick, clipped efficiency. He didn’t have the time for pleasantries. Nobody did when they were on the edge of death. “It appears there are many forces loyal to the empress amongst the passengers. I’m doing what I can.”

Alyssa closed her eyes. “Just ensure that the casualties are low,” she whispered.

Casualties had never been something Alyssa had thought about.
